If you've just got your hands on an XCJ200 standard test vibrating sieve, or you're thinking about getting one, the first thing you probably want to know is: how do I actually use this thing on a daily basis? The manual covers all the basics, but here's a more practical, real-world walkthrough based on how most labs actually run these machines.
Stacking your sieves the right way
First off, setting up your sieve stack. You'll want to put the bottom pan - that's the one with no mesh, just a solid tray - at the very bottom. That catches all the fines that pass through every sieve. Then you stack your test sieves on top of that, from coarsest to finest. So if you're running six sieves, the one with the biggest opening goes on top, and the smallest opening goes just above the bottom pan. Finally, put the lid on top to keep dust from escaping.
One mistake to avoid
Now, here's a tip that a lot of people overlook: make sure the sieves are nested properly. The rims should sit flush against each other. If one is slightly crooked, you'll get material leaking down the sides, and that ruins your whole analysis. Take an extra second to check alignment before you put the stack into the machine.
Locking it down securely
When you're ready, place the sieve stack onto the machine's base. Then loosen the four lock nuts - two on top and one on each side - so the side columns can drop down. They should rest firmly on the rim of the sieve stack. Once they're in position, tighten the side nuts first, then the top nuts. And I cannot stress this enough: tighten them well. If they're loose, the whole stack will rattle around and you'll get uneven sieving. Plus, it's noisy and can damage the mesh over time.
Setting the timer like a pro
Next, set the timer. The digital display is pretty intuitive. The first two digits are minutes, the last two are seconds. For most powders, I'd start with 5 to 10 minutes and see how it goes. If you're still seeing material on the sieves that should have passed through, increase the time. If everything passes through too quickly, reduce it. Every material is a bit different, so don't be afraid to experiment a little.
Running the test
Hit the green button to start. The machine will run until the timer runs out and then stop automatically. Or you can hit the red button if you need to stop early. Once it stops, carefully take out the sieve stack and weigh each fraction. That gives you your particle size distribution.
Cleaning without the headache
Cleaning is probably the most tedious part of the whole process, but it's also the most important for getting consistent results. After you've emptied each sieve, use a soft brush to remove any stuck particles. Then rinse everything in clean water. Dry the stainless steel frames with a dry cloth. For the mesh itself, you can put the sieves in an oven at 60°C for about 20 minutes if you're in a hurry, or just let them air dry. Don't use compressed air at close range, by the way - it can stretch or tear the mesh.
What to watch out for
A few things to watch out for during operation. If the machine starts making unusual noises, check the beam ring screws first. They tend to loosen over time. Also check if the sieve frames are sitting properly. If the motor feels hotter than usual, make sure the lubricant hasn't been overfilled. And if the material isn't moving across the sieve surface, the angle of the eccentric weights might have shifted. That's rare, but it happens.
